Obituary of Bette Lou Wheaton

Bette Lou (Mess) Wheaton, 78, went home to live with the Lord on Sunday April 14, 2013. Born in Swains, N. Y. on Jan. 25, 1935. She was the daughter of the late William and Nora (Thomas) Mess. She was married in Dansville, N.Y. to Kenneth Wheaton on Oct. 12th 1963. They lived in Bath and had three children. Jodi Loucks of Bath, Tyler Wheaton of Kanona, N.Y. and Jason Wheaton that lives at home. Bette also had five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Bette was survived by one sister, Cindy Hurtado of Palalka, Fl. and two brothers, Lenard Mess of Bellview, Fl. and Jim Mess of Oregon. Besides her parents, Bette had four brothers, Richard, Howard, Harold, and Jeffery Mess and two sisters, Bernice France and Josephine Robinson that predeceased her. After graduating from Dansville High School, she went to work for Westinghouse in Bath for 9 yrs. She then worked for the Bath Center for the Brain Injured and from there went to work for B.O.C.E.S. She worked with infant children 0- 3 yrs of age for 17 years. She then retired and started playing golf and working in her flowers. Bette volunteered at the gift shop at Ira Davenport Hospital and was a member of the V.F.W. and the American Legion of Bath. She was a member of the Methodist Church of Bath and at one time, very active with the social committee of the Bath Country Club . Friends of Bette can meet her family at the First Presbyterian Church of Bath 6 East Morris Street, Bath, N.Y. on Saturday, April 20th at 1:00 pm for a memorial service. The family will provide flowers and suggest memorial donations in Bette’s name be made to a charity of your choice.
