Obituary of Doris A. Hillman

Bath, NY - Doris A. Hillman, 83 of Bath, NY passed away on June 24, 2013 at her home, surrounded by family members after a courageous battle with cancer. Born September 28, 1929, in Corning, NY, she was the daughter of George and Hazel Winters. She graduated from Corning Northside High School in 1947 and attended Del Kadar School of Cosmetology in Elmira. Doris married her high school sweet heart, Thomas Hillman on May 27, 1950. She worked for her mother’s hair salon, Tru-Art Salon on Market St. in Corning and went on to own several businesses including a beauty salon in South Corning and the Handcraft Shop in Bath, NY. She devoted much of her time to raising seven children and enjoyed attending her grand children’s sporting events, gardening, crafting, cooking, golf and spending time at Keuka Lake. She was active in several organizations and was a life member of the Amaranth, both, Mizpah Court of Corning and Salubria Court of Bath, NY; Eastern Stars, and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 1208, Meade-Price, NY. She was also an active past member of the Wednesday Afternoon Women’s Golf League at the Bath Country Club and the Women’s Bowling League at Steuben Bowl, Bath, NY. Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Hillman, son Barry Hillman, George and Hazel Winters, her father and mother and brothers, John, Richard and Seldon, son-in-laws John Kogut and William Fitzwater, and grandson Cody Deats. She is survived by her seven children and spouses; Venna Hillman and Tom Griffis of Loveland, CO, Deborah Hillman Kogut of Branchport, NY, Mike and Stephanie Hillman of Bath, NY, Karen and Bob Owens of Hornell, NY, Jim and Christy Hillman of Bath, NY, Joseph and Sue Hillman of Bath NY and Tammy Fitzwater of Bath, NY, 16 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren and many other loving nieces, nephews and relatives. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Doris’s name may be made to the American Cancer Society, 13 Beech Street, Johnson City, NY 13790 and/or Care First, 11751 Corning Road, Corning, NY 14830. Morris Street, Bath, NY on Sunday, June 30th from 2:00 to 5:00 PM. Funeral service will be held at Centenary United Methodist Church, 3 West Washington St., Bath, NY on Monday, July 1st at 10:00 AM.
