Obituary of Robert Sargent Sampson

Robert S. Sampson, age 84, died Saturday, October 12, 2013 at Elcor Health Services in Horseheads, NY. Bob formerly lived in Bath and Hammondsport NY. He was born April 11, 1929 in Bridgeport, CT, the son of Edward Norton and Ruth Daley Sampson. He received his Bachelors Degree in Agricultural Engineering from Michigan State University, where he met Julieanne Dolores Rounds, who he married on December 30, 1950. He worked for International Harvester Company until 1965 when he bought Bath Truck and Tractor Company in Bath, NY and settled his family in Bath. He sold his business in 1980 and went on to sell real estate with Winter’s Real Estate in Bath.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Bath and a member of the choir. He was a member of the Bath B.P.O.E. 1547, the Ad-Libs men’s barbershop singing group, sailed E-scows at the Keuka Yacht Club and was a founding member of the Bath Shade Tree Committee. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and coin collector. After retiring, he enjoyed travelling and camping in his travel trailer.
His wife, Julie, died of cancer in 1991. He is survived by his son Robert N. (Joan) Sampson and his daughters Betsy S. Fusco and Bonnie S. (Alan) Oxley. His license plate PAPA-11 proudly acknowledged his 11 grandchildren: Adam Fusco, Lisa (Stephen) Caracci, Jennifer (Jeremy) Hunt, Michael (Alona) Fusco, Lauren Sampson, Robert Sampson, Ryan Sampson, Dillon Sampson, Weston (Amy) Oxley, Robin (Will) Arnold, and Megan Oxley. He has 14 great grandchildren: Sofia, Bella, Katie and Joseph Caracci; Noelle and Taryn Fusco; Cooper Hunt; Bella and Addison Fusco; and Caleb, Aidan, Ethan, Kellan and Quinn Oxley. He leaves behind a loving sister, Barbara Kensler, a sister-in-law, Ione Bacheler, and many nieces and nephews.
He will be remembered for his wonderful voice, his quick wit and his unselfish commitment to his family and friends. He lived life to the fullest and he will be dearly missed.
You are invited to pay respects and visit our family on Saturday, November 2nd from 3:00pm to 4:00pm at the Victory Highway Wesleyan Church, 150 Victory Highway in Painted Post NY. We will have a memorial service with Pastor Jay from 4:00pm to 5:00pm. We will then follow the service with a reception at the Steuben Bowling Academy, 29 E. Steuben St., Bath NY. And please, in lieu of flowers, we request that you send a donation to the Village of Bath Shade Tree Committee, Attn: Lee Cornaire, 220 W. Morris St., Bath NY, 14810.
