Obituary of Joseph E Paddock

Dr. Joseph Emory Paddock, DVM, passed away on Friday, May 2, 2014 at home. He was born in the Town of Milo, Yates County to J. William and Jane (Jean) McKie Paddock on May 14, 1927. He was educated in the rural schools of Italy Hill, Yates County and Cold Springs School, Steuben County and was extremely proud of his early school years. He was a proud member of the Haverling Class of 1944. He was a member of the University of Rochester Class of 1948 and Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, Class of 1952. He often stated that he was a member of the finest profession on earth. He practiced in Bath for 42 years, retiring in 1993. He served in the United States Army in the Adjutant General Department and later on reserve duty with the Veterinary Corps until 1957.
He was active in his profession and his community. His memberships included: American Veterinary Medical Association since 1952; Alpha PSI National Veterinary Fraternity since 1948; American Legion Post 173 in Bath; Finger Lakes Humane Society serving in numerous offices including a two year stint as president; Steuben County Hall of Fame Committee; Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine Alumni Association; New York State Association of Professions; Southern Tier Veterinary Society.
The Paddock family had three Cornell-trained veterinarians: Dr. Arthur Paddock, uncle of the deceased who practiced in Bath until 1954; Dr. Nicholas Paddock, brother of the deceased who practiced in East Aurora, NY; and Dr. Joseph E. Paddock. In 2007, the Paddock Lecture Hall at Cornell was dedicated in memory and honor of them.
He prided himself on his knowledge of local history of Bath and Steuben County, and loved to share his stories with others. He was a dedicated volunteer at the Magee House, home of the Steuben County Historical Society of which he was a Life Member.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Shirley Cooper Paddock whom he married on August 19, 1950, his parents, one brother, Dr. Nicholas McKie Paddock, and son-in-law Patrick Thompson. He married Mary Faucett Carlson on October 8, 1994. She survives.
He is also survived by three daughters, Jill (Tom) Santopietro of Pawley's Island, SC, Marcia Melnyk of Bath, and Beth Thompson of Bradford, PA; two step daughters, Beth Case of Wellsville, NY and Karen Carlson (Richard McNally) of Valley Falls, NY; 3 grandchildren; Megan Melnyk of New York City, Brian Thompson of Cambridge Springs, PA and Mark Thompson of Bradford, PA; 4 step-grandchildren: Emily and Taylor Case of Wellsville, NY and Sarah and Eloise Carlson McNally of Valley Falls, NY.
Calling hours will be held at Fagan's Funeral Home, West Morris St., Bath, NY on Monday, May 5th from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm. Funeral will be held on Tuesday, May 6th at 11 a.m. at St. Thomas' Church, Bath, NY. Burial with military honors will follow in Nondaga Cemetery, Bath. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, Bath, NY, St. Thomas' Episcopal Church, Bath, NY, Steuben County Historical Society, Cameron Place, Bath, NY or Society of the Finger Lakes Humane Society, Bath, NY.
