My condolences to the Joint family on the passing of Mary Helen. In the few instances where we interacted, I was always impressed with her scope of knowledge. She once lent me two volumes of an old publication on New York wildflowers. I probably had them for a couple of years, and one day researching a wildflower, I remembered I needed to return them. I stopped by Mary Helen's house and she insisted I come in and sit a while. We had a delightful conversation and I was impressed with her knowledge of natural history. People like this are true treasures and difficult to lose, but I am sure from our talk, that some of this character has passed on to future generations. D. Randy Weidner, MD, Bath, NY
