To Mom; thank you for being there always for me. For being there for your/my children/grandchildren.
The 4 plus hour drives to visit with 4 kids to visit me while away at seminary on visiting Sundays.
I know your obit never mentioned Mildred Jean Smith who proceeded your passing but got us all through that time March 23rd 1973.
Sorry on Mothers day in Dexter for bringing home a snake knowing you hated them.
You were always there and thanks.

Sending my condolences to Grandpa Smith. Grandma was such an amazing woman. Glad I could have you both as grandparents. Always fun to remember the big Saint Bernard dogs as a kid. We always had good time going on walks through the woods. Thanks for always being there for us.

Aunt Shirley as her daughters have said was a wonderful cook. I had flown to MI for a wedding and my luggage didn't arrive, right away she took me to her closet to find a dress and shoes. While I was there she had made her delicious cheesecake and was kind enough to share her recipe. Later one night Maj and Marie took me out. Aunt Shirley watched my son who had come with me. Always ready to help, definitely the nurse in her. In later years we didn't see her much but knew of her love for the farm and the many furry family. Her kind smile and love of the farm and what came with it was surely grandma (her mom) shining through. Sending prayers to my cousins and their families during this sad time. Hold tight to all your cherished memories.

Grandma Smith was always a joy to be around when we visited as children, and always gracious to host when I visited as an adult. She loved sharing family history and passing along the memories. I could have listed to her for hours as she walked me through the old photographs in her home and the stories she unearthed about our heroic relatives. She was always generous in knowing the best local cuisine and taking me out for a meal overlooking the beautiful scenery of upstate New York.
With every visit came a gentle invite to join the National Society of the Daughters of the Revolution, which I finally joined and now serve as Treasurer of our local chapter. It is an honor to carry on her legacy by serving an organization that meant so much to her.
The legacy of Grandma Shirley Jean Smith lives on in her great-grandchildren, Eloise Ann, John Paul, Benedict, & Peter Meinhart.

Grandma Smith was such a kind and caring person. She genuinely cared about what was going on in our lives. Even while she lived in New York and we lived in Michigan, I remember our Sunday afternoon phone calls where we would share what was going on in each others lives. I remember she raised Saint Bernard dogs for a season- I was always so curious about that as I loved dogs and a those are big dogs at that eat so much. She always loved talking about our rich family history. I still think it’s amazing how she spent so much time researching and how much information she was able to find. Her records are quite impressive! One of my favorite memories of Grandma Smith was when we went up to visit when I was in 4th grade with my family. I remember eating moon pies and listening to music on the back deck and we were all dancing together. We just had so much fun staying up late that evening!
I will miss you Grandma Smith

Grandma Smith. She owned land that was in the family for generations, cared deeply about her historical roots, and was proud of the service that her family had contributed. She cared about her kids and grandchildren, and was more than willing to welcome us into her home.
She took us to Bully Hill, Corning Glass, let us tour the farm, showed us the horses and Saint Bernard's, and taught me a lot.
You'll be missed, Grandma.

My Mother so loved all her five children, her grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She shared stories of visits with her grandchildren at the farm and she loved getting pictures and drawings sent by mail from Michigan, Ohio, Tennessee, New York and Illinois. She talked about celebrating birthdays, and with twins, Claire and Michael, making a vanilla cake for one and a chocolate cake for the other so they would both feel special. She loved talking on the phone and wanted to hear any news about the grandchildren, especially about her new grandbabies.
Mom always held a special place in her heart for her daughter, Millie who died tragically at age 15. She always spoke kindly of her beloved brother, Lyle or “Hath” and sisters, Mildred, and Beatrice or “Beatie”. She would fondly reminisce about her own childhood, growing up on West High Street in Painted Post, New York and the fun she had playing “kick the can” in the street with neighborhood kids. As a teenager she enjoyed going to high school dances at “The Cheese Factory” and working for the telephone company as an operator.
One of her greatest loves was her animals and, even as a little girl, she always took in stray dogs and cats. She spoke of her boxer dog and of riding the work horses on her grandfather’s farm. She always wanted to ride horses, and she finally realized her dream of owning a horse farm in retirement, building her beloved farm on land once owned by her grandparents. One of her favorite books was ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ and I think she would have loved being a veterinarian if given the chance.
She not only wanted to care for animals but also to help heal people. She bravely went back to school in her 40’s to become an LPN. She loved nursing and worked hard doing evening shifts and commuting over 45 mins each way in the Michigan winters in her ever faithful, black Jeep truck. She also encouraged me to pursue my degree in nursing. She was so proud when I was in school, telling her nursing friends at “St Joe’s” that her daughter was getting her BSN and then bragging when I graduated from college.
A love of nature and gardening was another passion that was passed down from her mother, Nora Hathaway and that she then shared with own children. The house was always filled with plants, and she always had flower and vegetable gardens. When we were growing up she did a lot of vegetable canning and made the best strawberry jam. She loved to hear what I was planting each season in my own garden and was always interested in what vegetables or fruits I was “putting up”.
Mom was also an excellent cook. Her other “Bible” was a copy of The Joy of Cooking. It was used so much that it lost its cover and had worn, tattered, and stained pages throughout. Her pies at Thanksgiving were legendary, and she always baked homemade cookies, cupcakes, and brownies for school functions and scout activities. She took pride in making healthy and nutritious meals from scratch and, if it was your birthday, well you could ask for anything you wanted and she would make it for you.
She loved ice cream or popcorn before bed, and she shared my love of soft black licorice, which she would buy in bulk to send to me. She loved getting specialty boxes of chocolates which I was told she was very possessive of, carrying them in the basket of her walker so dad wouldn’t eat them all.
She had a loved of music of all kinds but especially big band music, Louis Armstrong, and the composer, Chopin. She was so happy I married a musician, my Joe who she said was such a nice and kind man and that she was so happy for us and our lives in California. Although at the end of her life she was ill and her memory fading she always remembered to send her love at the end of each call and to tell Joe she loved him too.
Mom, I will always cherish the memories we shared, and you will be remembered in our hearts.
Rest easy,
Love Maj

My mother Shirley was a loving mother to all 5 of her children. Her daughter Millie preceded her in death, but she kept Millie's spirit alive in all our lives.
Though only in high school during the Korean War as it had ended just a month after her high school graduation. She nevertheless took the opportunity to enlist in the USAF. Unfortunately, she left the service before her time was up in order to take care of her mother. I am sure she would have loved to visit other countries, but she never left the USA during her short time in the USAF.
Mom loved the outdoors, dogs, cows, horses and all living creatures. She learned to ride after her retirement and enjoyed many hours with her grandchildren Claire and Michael on the farm.
Mom and I took quilting classes together in Fairport NY and spent many lovely hours quilting, talking, drinking an occasional glass of wine. She admired many crafts such as pottery and woodworking. She never was a potter; her craft was making beautiful quilts that will last generations.
She was so proud of her grandchildren. When Claire graduated from University of Michigan Law school she was beaming. And when she learned Michael was pursuing his masters, she was so excited.
Mom and dad both loved my husband, Mark. They often joked about how they liked him much more than their own sons. That was probably because Mark, being a decorated officer in the USAF meant they all had something in common.
My mom was a wonderful cook. She could take a bag of peas, throw in a ham bone, carrots, onion and celery and make the most delicious soup. Pea's soup was Millies's favorite, and mom would make it for her birthday each year. I think above all she was a great cook when there wasn't much money to go around.
I will be making porgies tonight in her honor.
RIP mom you had a long and mostly happy life.
