Obituary of Dean Aurand
Ira Dean Aurand — Age 89, of Robie Street, Bath, NY, died Wednesday, May 31, 2023 at
Guthrie Hospital in Towanda, PA, with family by his side. He was born in Luthersburg,
Pennsylvania on January 11, 1934, to Earl and Luella Aurand.
Dean retired from NAPA Auto Parts in Bath, NY after 41 years, and has been a bus driver for the Bath Central School District
for the past 19 years. He enjoyed working on engines and refurbished a ‘57 Chevy, showing it
off in the Dairy Parade. He was a faithful member of the Avoca Baptist Church. He was selfless,
giving, and always witty, with his life revolving around family and friends. Dean was a very loving
and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother. To all the kids on his
bus over the years, he was known as “Mr. Dean” everyone’s favorite bus driver. He genuinely
loved what he did and the students. When asked how work was, he would always say, “My day
was perfect”.
He is survived by his two daughters, Wendy (Carl) Spady of Elmira, NY, and
Sandy Hmiel of Corning, NY; his sister Evelyn Timblin of Wichita Falls, TX; his grandchildren,
Corey (Jessica) Hmiel, Jessica Spady, Ryan Spady, John Hmiel, and Derek (Karen) Hmiel; and
his great-grandchildren Dean, Marietta, Hannah, and Hayden Hmiel.
He was predeceased by his wife Betty Aurand, and sisters Georgie Kuntz and Joan Harris. His kind heart and smile will
be missed.
Friends may call on Monday, June 5 from 1 - 3 p.m. and 5 - 7 p.m. at Fagan’s Funeral Home in
Bath, NY. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 6 at 1 p.m. at the Avoca Baptist
Church, with Pastor Brandon McAfee officiating. Private graveside services will be held in
Nondaga, Cemetery in Bath, NY.
