I can not be there, sadly.
Matt was a dear friend of mine, though.
I have known him since before I was 5 years old. I am in my mid 70’s now so he is and was one of my oldest and truest friends.
Matt always stayed in touch when we grew up as adults in this world and remained a steadfast, loyal friend throughout all these many years.
Just weeks before he died Mat left me a voice message just to say hello, letting me know he was thinking about me and was always there . There are not many friends who do this so he was very special to me and I have held him in my heart all these many years. He always gave me the gift of a call to see how my day was going. It was reassuring to know he was always there.
I could always count on him which is rare these days.
Matt championed those who were bullied, made fun of or mistreated or victims of cruel gossip or injustice of any kind. He stood up for his friends, stood by their sides, always a lamppost for many in dark times .
He kept us all laughing . He showed us what loyalty meant and what love from good friends whose light never went out was all about. I still can not believe he is gone.
I will cherish all Matt’s calls all these many years and wish I had returned the last one a few weeks before he died which will haunt me forever…as I was not there for him in his final hours.
He went through so much that was emotionally difficult but never gave up and fashioned a life in spite of everything. His was not an easy path but he walked it with grace and always extended a hand to others no matter his personal struggles.
What a brave soul he was. What burdens he carried and rarely spoke of. What kindness he showed to everyone.
I will miss Matt the rest of my days.
I could count on him every month to see how things were going. A minister he was, in his own right. And I will pass on what he did for me as best I can to others and hope it will make a difference in others ‘s lives as it has in mine.
With deep sadness, I am holding all of you in my heart.

Matt will be missed by so many friends. We will always have such fond memories of being next door for many years at the lake.
May you all remember the "good times", be "comforted by the love", and "celebrate" a life well-lived.
With deepest sympathy,
Nancy Fagan Tuttle

Loved getting to know Matt when we lived next door at the lake.
And we shared a name.

A kinder, gentler, more thoughtful and generous person is unlikely to cross the path of anyone fortunate to have known Matt. May he rest in a well deserved peace. My sincere condolences go out to Allen, Timmer, Phil and Molly; all of whom by the way are pretty special too! Renny Bowers. Hilton Head, SC.

Had fun with Matthew in Seattle at Mother Morgan's Gumbo Factory...
He played some Bach and Mozart for me one time on a visit in a small church in California.
I loved him like a brother. He was a true friend, a dedicated scholar, and family historian.

Mathew was working in Corning and I met him soon after starting a job there. Then, we remembered I had met him before. He and my brother, Lou, and wife, Carol had met him at CCC. Such a warm, friendly, and kind man.

Rest in peace my dear childhood lake friend. For so many years we celebrated our birthdays together at my house across the road from yours. What special memories of those days long gone.
