I have had the pleasure of knowing Freeman, or as I called him "Bub" since I was eight years old. He was one of the most spirited people I have known. To make his point he often resorted to his collection of life-long comical stories about similar instances; whatever the situation was. In recent years he continued to quote famous personalities to tell a story. My last visits with Freeman at the lake over the past few years was an added treat to enjoy great laughs together over a good glass of wine.
Very Sincerely,
Peter Castrilli

Condolences to his family and friends. Freeman’s support of the the Steuben County United Way was significant. His former wife, Ellen, and I were business partners. I was a neighbor when he lived on Third Street on Corning. Rest peacefully, Freeman.

Dear Rusty and family,
Sending my deepest sympathy to you all. Freeman and I were almost the same age, but as a young girl he was known to me as "Bubby". Took me a while to change to Freeman when we became "adults". He, being a part of my life for so long, meant so much to me. I am pleased that I will be able to attend his celebration of life with my family and long time friends.

I'm so sorry to hear about your dad! Although he told me his cancer was back, he was looking so good and was in great spirits when I saw him only a few weeks ago. I was so sad to hear of his passing . I will always remember his smile as he drove his boat. That's how I'll always remember him, doing exactly what he loved to do - enjoying Keuka Lake. ❤️❤️❤️

"Bubby" and I were best friends from kindergarten. So many memories flash through my mind: riding bikes all over town to find the house of our third grade teacher whom we had a crush on; playing with his Lionel train set on the back sun porch; having lunch in the breakfast nook with the best tunafish sandwich his mother made; building forts and sleeping in tents in the back yard at Water Street; hunting anything that moved with our BB guns at the Keuka Lake cottage; celebrating my 18th birthday in Elmira, where we could legally drink; and driving around (sober) in his beautiful 1957 Corvette. These are but a few of the memories I hold of Bubby, Susan, Mrs. Smith, and Doctor Smith.

To the entire Smith Family,
We had offices right next to each other and shared many wonderful times. He was one of a kind and had so many great caring and fun loving qualities. But, Freeman could get very serious and down to business when needed. He and Dick Rahill will be running the show in Paradise. ❤

I first met Freeman when myself and a girlfriend landed in Florida for a vacation, and Mich has been called away on family business.
Freeman was the most generous host anyone could ask for.
He wined and dined us two gals to the finest.
We may have been two complete strangers, yet Freeman made us feel right at home.
Till next time, my friend

I had the privilege of working alongside Freeman for many years. He was truly one of the good guys and working for him contributed to some of my most memorable adventures. He lived his life to the fullest.
To Rusty, Eiron and the grandkids and to Mitch, Chip, Susan and the rest of his family, my heart breaks for you. I'm not sure Heaven can contain his larger-than-life spirit. May he live on in all of you.
Laura Kaul
And all the Corning colleagues who knew and loved him.

Freeman was a good friend to have. You could always depend on him. I was connected to him in the world of politics and he was great to depend on.
Besides the politics he was an every day type of friend, always glad to see you, and make you feel good.
I will miss him. he was one of the best.
