Obituary of Tina Marie Sprague Monroy

Please share a memory of Tina to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Tina Marie Sprague Monroy passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, November 23, 2023.

Tina was born in Penn Yan, NY on May 15, 1956 to the late Dorothy Swarthout Sprague Miller and Edwin Sprague. She was the youngest of their five children.

She attended Horseheads Central School and graduated in 1974. She went on to work in various fields, including food service, retail, and house cleaning. She spent her last years of employment at the Bath Salvation Army in the warehouse. It was here that she established many of her most cherished friendships. Following the pandemic, Tina made the decision to enter retirement.

She married Steven R. Ormsby in 1976. They shared one daughter, Danielle. While this union ended, Tina’s relationship with the entire Ormsby (and extended) family continued. She married Michael D. Monroy in 1985. They shared a son, Michael (Mickey) D. Monroy. They were married for over 32 years. Their union ended in 2018, but Tina continued to care deeply about the Monroy family. She then began her journey of self-rediscovery, independence and enlightenment.

Tina was an empathetic soul who always saw the very best in others.  She loved her family and friends immensely and made sure to both show them and tell them. She possessed a quiet strength–one fueled by love and fierce determination.Tina had a passion for clothing and an incredible sense of style. She never failed to make others laugh with her quick wit and sense of humor.

Tina was predeceased by her parents, as well as her brother Timothy, sister Vicki, and brother-in-law Earl Putnam. She is survived by her heartbroken children, Danielle (Michael) Donovan of Livonia, NY, Mickey (Gina) Monroy of Bath, NY, sister Charyl Putnam of Murrells Inlet, SC, brother Gale “Butch” (Ruth) Sprague of Bath, NY, grandchildren Kellen, Quinlynn and Eiley Donovan of Livonia, NY, niece Marcie (Jaime) Johnston of Worcester, MA, nephews Stacy Putnam of Murrells Inlet, SC, Ryan Sprague of Corning, NY, Farrell Sprague of Rochester, NY and Timothy (Laura) Sprague of VA. She is also survived by her aunt, Bonnie Kastner of Bath, cousins Janice (Skip) Smith of Bath, Betty Ann (Mark) Green of Bath and Tuesday (Michael) Mishook of Bath, her beloved in-laws (especially Ken and Kellie Monroy), many great-nieces and nephews, as well as her wonderful and loving friends (especially her Salvation Army family).

Calling hours will be held at Fagan’s Funeral Home, Bath, NY on Saturday, December 2, 2023 from 11:00am-1:00pm with a memorial service immediately following.

While the sudden loss of Tina has been difficult, her family and friends promise to carry-on her legacy of unconditional love. While at times it felt as though this world didn’t deserve her, we are all so very grateful that she was given to us anyway.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Finger Lakes SPCA in Tina’s honor.
