Obituary of Chester LeRoy Dowdle
Chester L. Dowdle, a man of kind spirit and thoughtful nature, passed away peacefully on November 5, 2024, at the age of 78. Born on August 8, 1946, in the Town of Urbana, NY, Chester grew up to become a pillar of his community in Bath, NY, where he eventually said his goodbyes surrounded by the love of his family.
Chester's life was one of dedication and service. After graduating from Hammondsport Central School, he honorably served his country as an Army Veteran. His post-military career saw him working as a Machine Mechanic at McConnell's in Prattsburgh, NY, where he was not only respected for his work ethic but also cherished for his camaraderie.
After retirement Chester found joy in camping every chance he and Patty got. The memories and stories from camping trips were a focal point in Chester's life. He was always up for anything with his camping family. Chester was an avid race fan. From watching the boys for years, to cheering on his best friend Dave Dubois on Saturday nights.
Chester was deeply involved in his community. He was a proud member of the Bath V.F.W. Post 1470, Charles E. Wescott American Legion Post 173 in Bath, and the Savona Rod and Gun Club. His commitment to service and community was a testament to his character and his desire to make a positive impact on those around him.
Chester's passion for the outdoors was a defining aspect of his life. He raised horses and was a fierce competitor in Horse Pulling competitions, a sport where he found both challenge and joy. His love for coon hunting was equally well-known, often seen with his loyal dog by his side, enjoying the tranquility of the woods. These interests were not just hobbies; they were integral parts of Chester's identity and the way he connected with the world around him.
Family was the cornerstone of Chester's life. He is survived by his loving life partner, Patricia K. Lee, and children Robert D. Buckley Jr. (Karla), Fred Buckley (Carol), Lucretia Buckley, and Douglas Buckley (Tambi). His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Nicole Anderson, Kaili Solinas, Kristal Dvorak, Kelsi Buckley, Samantha Buckley, Trent Buckley, Garrison Cole, Brooke Buckley, and Casey Buckley, as well as several great-grandchildren; his siblings, L. Ruth Dowdle (Jim) and Bruce E. Dowdle (Florence), and his camping family..
In remembering Chester, we recall the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, "To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded." Chester's life was indeed a success by this measure, as he touched numerous lives with his kindness and thoughtfulness.
Chester L. Dowdle's story is one of love, service, and unwavering commitment to the things he held dear. His memory will be cherished and kept alive in the hearts of those who knew him. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we take comfort in knowing that his influence will continue to be felt by all who had the privilege of crossing paths with him. Chester will be dearly missed, yet his spirit remains a guiding light for his family, friends, and community.
A graveside service with military honors will be held on Thursday November 7, 2024 at 11:00 am at the Bath National Cemetery.
