Obituary of Donald E. Thompson
Please share a memory of Donald to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Donald E. "Snowman" Thompson went to Heaven peacefully on June 12, 2015 holding the hand of his loving wife and companion of 44 years, Eileen (Shugars) Thompson. He fought a long battle with COPD and Leukemia. Born in Bath on May 28, 1935, one of Bath's original "good ole boys". He was the son of Wilmont and Grace (Phillipson) Thompson.
Don was an over the road truck driver most of his life. He loved to tell people he "Backed up more miles than they drove forward." He drove from coast to coast, visiting 48 of our 50 states.
Surviving are his loving daughter, Dawn (Mark) Allen of Bath, NY; Loving son, Donald (Jannette) Thompson of Rochelle, IL; Donna Cowley of Sterling, IL; Richard and Darlene Thompson of Mount Morris, IL; Rebecca Nash of Elmira, NY and sister Donna Colson.
Don was the most wonderful Papa to Devyn and Megyn Allen. Megyn was his "all time favorite nurse" waiting on him hand and foot. Devyn was his special fishing buddy. Other grandchildren include Kim, Bill, David, Candice, Christopher, Carrie, Cassie, Jay, Brett and Thomas. He also has 13 great-grandchildren.
Don was predeceased by brothers, Wilmot Thompson, George Winters and Richard Thompson; 2 sisters, Wilma Wheaton and Mildred Oleson.
Don Boy loved hunting and fishing at the cabin with Harry and B.J. Some of his favorite pastimes were watching racing and baseball games. He was a lifelong Yankees fan. He was known for his famous meatloaf; everyone loved his cooking. You could always count on him to bring the venison. Don was very proud of his beautiful peonies. He was a huge demolition derby fan attending the Bath Fair derby for more than 30 years with his daughter Dawn.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Falck Cancer Center, 600 Roe Avenue, Elmira, NY 14905 or the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), Western & Central New York Chapter, 4043 Maple Road, Suite 105, Amherst, NY 14226.
