One of the great teachers of Haverling.
Loved the ingenious mirror system he set up in his office so he could see what you were doing in class.

My deepest condolences to the Spear family. Irv was like a second father to me and I will never forget the lessons learned from him. From the handling of the scow to the tying of the seth-green rig, his teachings still echo in my head. Even as a teen, when I was aspiring to be an architect, he had words of wisdom and common sense planning ideas. As a boy I always loved it when he and Dusty would come to the cottage for a visit.
Irv, I loved you like a father and will always think of you as such.
Rest in peace.

We are saddened to hear of Irv's passing. It was always a pleasure to be in his company. Many good memories on Keuka Lake during sailing season and also in the educational environment. Peace to the family at this time.

Mr. Spear had more impact on my life than anyone outside of my family.
The classroom teaching (and banter), the science projects, the science fairs, and the summer field trips are 'forever' memories. He gave my life focus that took me to the right college and eventually the right career.
Luckily, I talked to Mr. Spear just a few years ago and got to tell him how I felt. He was a TEACHER in the purist sense. One that all of of us should be blessed to have.
Please accept my condolences.

I graduated from Haverling in 1965 which is now 50 years ago, but when I think of Mr. Spear the time vanishes. I see him at his desk or standing at the front of the classroom. He challenged us and opened up the world of science to us. Lenny Bowers and I went to the Alfred science fair with projects that he suggested and supported. The summer field trips to the hanging valleys at Keuka Lake were the beginning of my fascination with geology. As well I knew Irv from the Yacht Club where he always seemed to be able to extract a little extra forward momemtum from the wind and win most of the races. The Spears were the Yacht Club. While he will be missed by many, he will continue to be a part of many more memories
Condolences to family and friends, David Werner

Our condolences to the Speer family. Susie and I have many found memories of Mr. Speer. I loved his 9th grade Earth Science class and as a result pursued a degree in Geology at SUNY Geneseo. Susie and I both had the opportunity to experience the Keuka Yatch Club courtesy of the Speer Family. I was hooked on sailing as a result, and with Mr. Speer's help rehabilitated an old wood planked hull Snipe sailboat. I can remember some cold winter nights with Mr. Speer and my dad in the barn behind our house in Kanona sanding on the hull. Susie remembers Mr. Speer rescuing her and Pam after getting stranded on a Sunfish sailboat in the middle of Keuka lake ! Our thoughts and prayers go out the entire Speer family.

Anything Irv did he did to excel: skiing at Lake Placid, racing his E Scow in competitions all over the country, building his house or other shop projects, iceboating, singing the old songs on our guitars, teaching, gardening, cooking, spinning yarns. He was a Renaissance man, truly. Farewell, friend.
