Obituary of Margaret U. Doherty
Please share a memory of Margaret to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Margaret (Mardo) Underhill Doherty of Hammondsport, died July 17 at the age of 92 in her home, Tall Trees. She was born May 7, 1924 to Florence (Winner) and Edwin Stewart Underhill Jr. in Corning where they lived. The family moved to Hammondsport in 1934, where her father was President of the Urbana Wine Company. This began a lifelong love affair with her oasis on Keuka Lake.
Mardo graduated from the Knox School in Cooperstown NY in 1941 and attended Dana Hall Academy in Wellesley MA in 1942. She earned a B.A. in Economics from Wheaton College in Norton MA in 1946. Her grandfather, Seth Winner led her to develop a love for horses, and she became an accomplished equestrienne in her teens.
She married Matthew F. (Bud) Carney Jr. on July 12, 1946. They resided in Corning for many years with their five children: Matthew, Allen, Tim, Phil and Molly. The couple were divorced in 1972. Mardo moved to Keuka Lake in 1975, and was married to William (Tony) Doherty in 1982.
Mardo and Tony tarried hard at the maintenance of their beloved Keuka Lake home, traveled frequently with their pets, and were active in civic affairs. Mardo was a Cub Scout den mother, Girl Scout troop leader, volunteer with the Chapter P for Corning Hospital, a member of the Hammondsport Zoning Board of Appeals, and a board member of the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum. She was a member of the board of directors of The Leader, and worked at the Willow Shop in Painted Post for many years.
Mardo is survived by her 5 children, 2 stepchildren, Trafford Doherty and Jacquie Anne Doherty, 5 grandchildren, Brendan Carney, Jacob Carney, Caitlin Carney, Garrett Carney, Todd Carney, two great-grandchildren, Baxter Carney and Tristan Carney, three step grandchildren, Chris Doherty, Brian Doherty, and Elizabeth Bjarning, two step great grandchildren, Hans and Erik Bjarning, two nieces, Emily Luchetti and Anne Underhill, two nephews, Chip Underhill and Allen Underhilll, and many in-laws and a multitude of others who will greatly miss her.
Mardo had a zest for life that was colorfully enhanced by her forceful nature and her relationships with those she encountered. She loved conversation and seldom passed up an opportunity to chat. She had a keen interest in others and often an incisive observation over who they were. She had a sense of humor and often made others laugh. Her generosity, humility, and love of Keuka Lake will be long remembered.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday July 21st at 2 pm at the St. James Episcopal Church in Hammondsport, NY. In lieu of flowers memorial donations in her name may be made to the Curtiss Museum at www.glennhcurtissmuseum.org/support.
