Obituary of Mary Florence Hunter Reed

Mary Florence Hunter Reed, 80, of Elmira, NY, peacefully passed away on February 18, 2017. Mary Flo was born in Elmira, NY to James and Mimi Hunter. She went to high school at Elmira Free Academy and the MacDuffie School. She attended college at Wheelock College, Boston, MA and Elmira College. Mary Flo is survived by her sons Jim (Meg), Bill (Laurie) and David Reed; her grandchildren: Hunter Reed, (Portland, OR), Kelsey Reed (Boston, MA), Gavin Reed (Anchorage, AK), Zachary Reed (Geneva, NY), Samantha Reed (Hammondsport, NY) and Christopher Reed (Elmira, NY); and her siblings Philip Hunter (Cindy), Alice Weeman (Fred) and Becky Sager . Mary Flo was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Beldon Reed, and her sister Martha Pendleton (Newt). Mary Flo lived for her friends and family upon whom she lavished endless food, hospitality and conversation. To grow up in the Reed home was truly a wonderful thing—two parents who worked hard every day, never missed a meal together, attended every parent meeting, every game, every Boy Scout meeting. If you were a Reed boy, you knew your parents had your back every minute and you also knew the hammer would drop the second you stepped too far out of line. Flo was a devoted mother and grandmother who loved nothing more than being surrounded by her brood. Gma attended countless soccer games, lacrosse games, graduations and awards ceremonies for her beloved grandchildren. She was always there, even if it meant watching a game from the comfort of her car in the pouring rain. The gift she gave her grandchildren and their parents of her presence... priceless. In good times and bad, "Gma" was always there and her loving presence will be sorely missed. In keeping with Flo's request, a small family service will be held at the convenience of the family. Memorial donations may be made to Seneca View Skilled Nursing Facility, 220 Steuben Street, Montour Falls, NY 14865 where Flo was so kindly cared for by her many new friends. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the wonderful folks at Seneca View who so compassionately cared for our mother and grandmother.
