Obituary of Herbert Fort

Herbert Fort (92) of Bath, NY passed away at his home on August 18, 2017. He was born February 13, 1925 in the village of Bath to the late Herbert D. and Eldora (Stewart) Fort. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Harriett Davis Fort, daughters Lorraine (James) Kewley, of Lakeland, FL, Susan (Milton) Wheeler, of Bath, NY, Christine (William) Burgher of Skaneateles, NY, Cindy (Steven) Rusak of Bath, NY and son David (Andrea) Fort of Charles Town, WV. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Bryan Kewley, Brent Kewley, Shawn Wheeler, Jonathan Wheeler, Matthew Burgher, Christopher Burgher, Kenzie Rusak, Justin Rusak, Marcel Fort, and Jessica Fort, nine great grandchildren, Cameron, Connor, Grace & Christian Kewley, Joshua & Ryan Wheeler, Tyler, Jayden, & Alyssa Fort and several nieces and a nephew. He was predeceased by a brother Edward L Fort, and a sister Arlene Workman.
He was a 1942 graduate of Canisteo Central School and attended Cornell University and Rensselear Polytechnic while serving in the Navy during World War II. He graduated from Baldwin Wallace College in 1948. He also attended the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin and the School of Banking at Rutgers University.
After college, he held several office jobs and became employed by the Bath National Bank on April 1st 1955, working to eventually serve as President and Director. He retired in 1989. During his tenure, the bank acquired the First National Bank of Wayland, Dundee State Bank, and branches in Hammondsport, Hornell, Avoca and Bath, NY. In the course of his banking career, he also served as a Director of the Federal Reserve of New York {Buffalo} office for three years and served the Board of the Ira Davenport Memorial Hospital.
His many interests included being a private pilot, an amateur radio operator, an avid sportsman, a competitive trap shooter, bowler and golfer.
He was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and enjoyed genealogical research.
He was a 32nd Degree Mason member of Steuben Lodge #112 F.A.M.
He was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church.
Family and friends are invited to call from 6-8:00 PM on Monday, August 21, 2017 at Fagan's Funeral Home, Bath, NY. There will be a Mason service at 7:45 PM.
A Funeral Service will take place at 11:00 AM Tuesday, August 22, 2017 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church with Interment immediately following at Nondaga cemetery, Bath, NY.
Memorials may be made in Herbert's memory to St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Bath, NY or to a charity of one's choice.
