Obituary of Joan M. Finan

Please share a memory of Joan to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Joan M. Finan, age 89, of Painted Post, NY died April 23, 2018 at the Guthrie Corning Hospital. She was born February 14, 1929 in New Albany, PA, the daughter of Grover Worthington and Helen Dyer. Joan was a Kindergarten teacher at Bradford Central School for over 30 years. She began in 1954 as Miss Worthington and became Mrs. Finan on December 4, 1954 when she married Joseph Finan. Joan's love for teaching and her students could not be measured. If you ask any of her students, they will go on and on with stories of Mrs. Finan's Kindergarten and their first experiences in school. After retiring from teaching, Joan spent her time volunteering at the Taylor Nursing Home in Bath, NY. She also volunteered at the Food Pantry but closest to her heart was her involvement with the Bradford Fire Department. She enjoyed calling people for food donations for their annual barbeque. Also, in her spare time, Joan was known to send out birthday cards and get-well cards. She was truly an angel to those who knew her. Joan entered Three Rivers nursing home almost 14 years ago. She has made quite an impact on everyone she has come in contact with. She is a mother to some, sister to some, and counselor to some, but most importantly she was a friend to all. There is not one person that is able to say a negative thing about her. She always made sure everybody was doing what they were supposed to be doing, going to the doctor's, staying in their wheelchairs, eating their meals, etc. That would be why she was always voted President of the Resident Council. They knew if you needed something done Joan was the one to get it done. The most important thing about her is she loved deeply, she loved hard, and she loved all, and they all definitely knew they were loved by her. She is survived by her son Shawn Finan and partner John McAllister of Painted Post, NY, daughter, Kathleen (Vaughn) Drake of Hornell, NY, grandchild Devan Drake and girlfriend Teasha Brown, cousin Fred (Aysel) Dyer, and their daughter Ayla, and sister-in-law, Amelia Finan. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Finan, son, Joseph (Joey) Finan, grandson, Clay Drake, and parents, Grover Worthington and Helen Dyer Worthington. Family and friends are invited to call on Saturday, April 28th from 11:00-2:00 at Fagan's Funeral Home in Bath. There will be a private family service at Seaman's Cementery after the calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Mrs. Finan's name may be made to the Roo Reading Program, checks payable to Winfield PTA, Winfield Elementary School, c/o Shawn Finan, 193 Winfield St. Corning, NY 14830 or to the Steuben County Suicide Prevention Coalition, in memory of Clay Drake, c/o Steuben County Community Services, 115 Liberty Street, Bath, NY 14810.
