Obituary of Evelyn C. Wightman

Evelyn C. Wightman passed away peacefully at home with family by her side on Friday, May 11th. She was born in Passaic, New Jersey on March 6th, 1929. She graduated from Verona, New Jersey High School. She then attended Alfred University where she met and married her husband, Robert Wightman. They moved to Bath in 1952, where her husband began practicing law with his father, Alton J. Wightman. Our mother was a homemaker, who raised 5 children, loved knitting, gardening, cooking bridge and the game of golf. Most of all, she loved being with family and friends. She was a member of the Bath Presbyterian Church for over 65 years, volunteered at Ira Davenport Hospital for over 50 years, and also volunteered at the Bath VA Medical Center for 15 years. Evelyn also enjoyed volunteering at the Corning Classic LPGA Tournament during its span. She also served as the Vice-President of the Bath Country Club and worked local elections for many years. One of her proudest achievements was receiving the Rotary Paul Harris Award for community service. She was predeceased in 1986 by her husband, Attorney Robert M. Wightman. Later, by her beloved sister Grace and brothers Lester and Richard in addition to her husband. She is survived by her children, Patricia (Judy) Shoemaker of Rochester, NY, Christine Klunk of Bendersville, PA, Leslie (Richard) McDonald of Campbell, NY, Kathryn Fernandez of Albany, NY, Stephen Wightman of Campbell, NY and Nadia Bailo-Piglia, 14 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and her close friend of many years, Elinor Jones, of Bath, NY. In addition, she is survived by her brother-in-law Edward (Nancy) Wightman of Hammondsport, NY, sisters-in-law Sylvia (Milt) Eaton of Vermont and Bev (Richard) Congdon of New Jersey. Calling hours are scheduled from 3pm-6pm on May 26th, at the Fagan's Funeral Home in Bath, NY. A Memorial Service for her life will be held at the 1st Presbyterian Church of Bath on Sunday, May 27th at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, it is her request that donations be made to CareFirst of Corning, NY or the 1st Presbyterian Church of Bath, NY. .
