Obituary of Donald M. Simmons II

Please share a memory of Donald to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Donald M. Simmons II, known affectionately as Don to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on June 25, 2024, in Penn Yan, NY. Born on August 24, 1935, in Ithaca, NY, Don's journey through life was marked by his entrepreneurial spirit, love for his friends and family, and passion for the great outdoors.

Don embarked on a successful career in the automotive industry when he started his own car business on July 25, 1964, with just two salesmen. Through his dedication and business acumen, he became the proud owner of Simmons Rockwell, a name that would grow to be synonymous with quality and integrity in the car business. Don's hard work and leadership were a testament to his character, and his legacy in the industry will be long remembered.

A proud Army veteran, Don served his country with honor and dignity. His service was a defining period of his life, instilling in him values of discipline and comradery that he carried forward into his business practices and personal relationships.

Don's zest for life was evident in his diverse interests and hobbies. He was an avid sailor, often found navigating the serene waters with a steady hand and a gleeful heart. Kite flying was another pursuit that brought him immense joy, symbolizing his love for the simple pleasures in life. Don was also an enthusiastic fisherman, bowler, and golfer, relishing the opportunity to spend time with friends and enjoy the spirit of competition.

Winter months would find Don carving through the snow with skill and grace, as skiing was a seasonal passion. And when it came to sports, he was a fervent Buffalo Bills football fan, never missing a game and always cheering on his beloved team with hope and loyalty.

Above all, Don cherished his family. He was predeceased by his father Donald M. Simmons, Sr. on April 2, 1999 and his mother Helen (Frost) Catley on July 31, 1997 and his twin sister Patti Simmons on November 29, 2016. He is survived by his significant other, Coralie Smith, her children Derrick, Devon, and Cassandra, and their families, including grandchildren Maggie, Luke, Quinn, Hadley, Rowen, Aiden, Killian, and Montana. Don's role as a patriarch was one he embraced with love and pride, and his guidance and wisdom will continue to influence his family for generations to come.

Special friends Nora Morgan and Donny Falzarano played a significant role in Don's life, sharing in his triumphs and standing with him through challenges. Their friendship was a source of comfort and joy, and their memories with Don will be cherished forever.

A quote from Don: "Life is a journey and love is what makes the journey worthwhile". Don truly embodied this sentiment, touching the lives of many with his generosity, love and kindness.

His life was a journey filled with laughter, love, and a deep appreciation for the beauty of the world around him. Don's legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew him and in the business he built from the ground up. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.

As the sun sets on a life well-lived, we bid farewell to Donald M. Simmons II, a man of honor, a beacon of joy, and a true success in every sense of the word. May he rest in peace, knowing that his life was a gift to us all.
